KAWAII - YEAH, KEENLY! KOCLIKO RECORDS, 2019

Two Norwegians, Mats Jørgensen and Hedda Fredly, formed Kawaii more than 15 years ago and bumped into the indie scene with a splendid debut album in the American label Shelflife Records. With their first album, which was meticulously prepared and literally baked in their own kitchen, they conceived a unique sound and, at the same time, eclectic and heterogeneus, among casiopop, indiepop and electro-synthpop. Really creative and special.

After releasing a song for a compilation in the Perubian, now Spanish-based label, Plastilina Records, and after covering Belle & Sebastian for another compilation, that one for the Italian label Kristen’s Postcard, the duo started working on their second album which, sadly and surprisingly, was filed and unreleased up to now. It is surprising mainly because this second album is so stimulating, inspiring and inspired, as the first one, and it approaches its conception and performance with the same originality, satisfaction and improvement.

Kocliko Records rescues this Scandinavian jewel and turns it into a 10” which, apart from the digital release that came some months ago, makes poetic and aesthetic justice for a so genuine piece. With “Yeah, Keenly!” Mats and Hedda develop and beat the peculiar bossa-pop sound (á la S.H.A.D.O. Records or Café Superestar, so common in the early 2000s) and they continue with the construction of an intelligent, vivacious and playful synthesizer indiepop, but never naive. And that is precisely their main characteristic mischief, because despite their name, Kawaii, and what initially may suggest a contact with their joyful and upbeat music, their record is surreptitiously deep.

In their songs they highlight again the creativity of programming, the vibrant rhythms and the whimsical beats, the use of keyboard and synthesizer lines, the guitars with shiny chords and the magnificent harmonic mathematic of their vocal plays, which are the prop of the loquacity in their lyrics. That is why “Yeah, Keenly!” proves how Kawaii went on as one of the most original projects in the treatment of an indiepop which not only followed the classical school of synthpop (á la OMD), but it also knew how to incorporate strategies, sounds and shades of tweepop, shoegaze, dreampop and even post-punk, with echoes from bands in labels such as Factory or Les Disques du Crépuscule, or from international indiepop from those days, so rich for a genre with synthetic haunt, especially in Scandinavia. All in all, this will be quite probably an emblem or a cult album for any Pacific from Creation lover, or the north American bands Kanda, Figurine, Creeping Jenny or the initial Magnetic Fields or even their Norwegian countrymen Micromars, or the more recent ones The Halamays or Deerful.

KAWAII - YEAH, KEENLY!
KOCLIKO RECORDS, 2019
