about

'For an album that touches on "death and earth and darkness," as Belinska says, 'Lost Illusions' is nonetheless a vivid, welcoming journey into fragile dreams and marine-blue epiphanies.

Running through the album like quick, coloured stitches through the sonic fabric are echoes of the indolent warmth of Tom Petty and the sunny guitars of The Feelies. But these passing signs never become the message or the substance of his song-writing. They function as small bridges between souls and times – places where the present touches the past.

Evoking the sudden grace of departures and the sweetness of returns, this album could only have come from someone filled with the bright, broken shells of experience.

Born in the small town of Stoke-On-Trent to Welsh and Polish parents, Belinska left for Newcastle aged 17. He didn’t settle for long; drifting to Glasgow, Berlin and Paris – supporting himself in a series of menial jobs; ranging from museum cleaner to estate gardener, all the while writing music on borrowed guitars and stolen notebooks, garnering praise from the French press and BBC along the way.

After meeting his future partner in Paris, the pair formed the band Paris, Texas, releasing two albums with cult producer Kramer - Low, Will Oldham, Daniel Johnston - before deciding to move back to Newcastle together, where the hand of Fate struck twice:

"Rushing to get a connection, I left a suitcase in York train station. It was never recovered. Most of the early songs disappeared."

"Some months later, I was walking home from work and was randomly assaulted by a gang of four in broad daylight.”

"During the recovery I decided to stop drifting once and for all. As a first gesture, I would record a new album."

After years of running, his art had become not only an escape from death, but a joyous, tender acknowledgement of it.'
